Terry TV: White Lies

New TV ad up by Congressman Lee Terry.
See it here:

This is, of course, a response to the last Tom White ad. The main crux of that spot was that White would vote to cut or freeze Congressional pay. (Which seems like sort of a goofy issue on which to base your first campaign spot, but anyway…)

So Terry’s spot nails White on that issue, and then hits him again his support of the $2 Trillion spending.

White shouldn’t worry though, because that is probably the last time Terry will mention that.

Probably.

Maybe.

On thing I noticed is White saying he voted to balance the budget–that's not true.

He voted against LB 5 last Special Session. That bill was key to balancing the budget. Another White lie?

  2. Logan says:

I think it should be noted that State Senators make a whopping $12,000 per year. An 83% raise (which did not happen) would bring that total up to about $20,000. At the same time, the current salary for members of the House and Senate is $174,000 per year.

  3. Anonymous says:

Like republicans never lie. Did you forget water gate,Iran Contra, Weapons of mass distraction. Republicans always balance budgets, et, etc, etc?

  4. Anonymous says:

I think it is fairly obvious that to ask for a pay increase for a state legislator making 12k is not a scandal to make hay with.

Coming from a long time player inside the Beltway, White's opponent enjoys a cushy benefit package, pension plan with endless perks and a salary of nearly 200k so cry me a river.

He didn't have to vote for his salary to increase when he knew the votes were there.

Once again, his family shots are no longer warm and fuzzy.

anon 1050. No one forgot. No one cared. Or he would have been gone. It might have helped if Livingston and Gingrich two GOP congressman who were trying the hardest to get rid of Clinton were not doing the same thing. Plus when is a BJ more important than domestic and foreign policy?

  6. Anonymous says:

11:21–you need to do better research.

Terry voted to freeze cong. pay–the vote is cited in the ad.

White's the one who voted for a pay raise–83%. If it is bad in principle, then he should have voted 'no'.

  7. Anonymous says:

    Let me get this straight–

White says pay should be cut but then votes to raise it 83%. He says the budget should be balanced but then votes against balancing it last fall.

The guy's word is no good.

  8. Anonymous says:

To 11:36: I always do my research.

When the votes are there, or some so crudely refer to as "the fix being in," some players can get off the hook by appearing to be against or for something to convenience their own interest at the time.

It brings Terry's nobleness into doubt through a different route.

It's called strategy to cover one's political hide.

  9. Anonymous says:

This will keep on happening. White is a fraud, and he's trying to hide who he is– a liberal democrat. He cannot run from his record, though. And wait til the character ads start. No one likes Tom White because Tom White is unlikeable. He's rude, arrogant, and believes he's the smartest man in the room whereever he is (which, interestingly, is incorrect, WHEREEVER HE IS).

  10. Anonymous says:

So you really think that Lee Terry checks the vote tally before voting against pay increases and for COLA freezes? And, he has been able to consistently do this for how many years now?

I suppose you think that is why he has voted against all Omnibus Bills in the House? That it has nothing to do with the fact that every pet project that couldn't find its way into a spending bill during committee gets put in for the Omnibus?

Congressman Terry has supported some spending measures that I would have preferred did not pass, like CFK. But I am not an all or nothing kind of voter and I am smart enough to do a little research and determine that Tom White is full of shit when he says he is an "independent voice"…

He was partisan in our non partisan legislature and even went to the extent of giving Ian Russell a leave of absence to run the fundraising project to elect only Dems to the Legislature during the 2008 cycle.

I heard that only one Republican got any of that money. I wonder which one it was-my money is on Brad Ashford.

To 3:34PM: Yuppers. It's how the boys play as told to me by a GOP big boy with big boy pants.

Give him credit. Sometimes our little Lee gets up from the kiddy table just to check what's up.

  12. Anonymous says:

The Hens will come home to roost and Tom White will be wondering what hit him. Kind of like back in the day when he was an aspiring boxer……? Maybe that is where he got the lopsided grin of his, a bit of TBI.

Either way the next 6+ weeks will be ugly.

  13. Ricky says:

Am I the only one who thinks Mr Terry is wasting his money on the "2 Trillion dollar difference?"
Terry has been in the House for 10 years, most of those under Republican House leadership and under a Republican President.
So the country has a record deficit an somehow he wants to blame Mr White?
Rep Terry should fire his consultant that thought up this boneheaded campaign.

No Ricky you aren't the only one that thinks that the ad is ineffective and says less about White than it reveals about Terry.

  16. Anonymous says:

    Sorry, guys.
Voters are concerned about spending and the debt.

Last thing you want to do then is elect someone who is on record as wanting to add $2 trillion to it.

    Especially when the other guy
(Terry) is on record against the new spending and debt.

So, good contrast between the two candidates–people have a pretty good choice.

    Excellent strategy by Terry.

45,000 Dead Americans a year, that's the difference between Lee Terry and Tom White

Tom White supported health care reform that would grant access to healthcare to every American, Lee Terry opposed health care reform, despite the fact that a CBS News research study found 45,000 Americans die every year because they don't have health care reform.

  18. Anonymous says:

People who support ObamaCare can vote for White. Those that don't support the $1.2 trillion gov't takeover of healthcare can vote for Terry.

    Pretty simple.

  19. Anonymous says:

8:01–if that's the case then why isn't Tom featuring his suopport for the healthcare law in his ads?

Seems he is trying not to talk about it…why is that?

  20. Anonymous says:

Monca no one cared. You still don't get it. But people did care about the lies the republicans tell. Because those lies affected their lifes. I see republicans saying negative things about Clinton's lies. So did democrats. When will you say something about your own sides lies?

  21. Anonymous says:

Terry wins, White loses and the rest is history:)

Oh and the State is safe from another liberal in the Legislature.

    A win-win situation for Nebraska.

  22. Anonymous says:

I absolutely believe that CBS news would air a story stating that 45,000 Americans die every year because there is no "health care reform".

That's why I don't get any of my facts from CBS News.

Sweetie, those same 45,000 will still die under your plan because Pelosi and Reid failed miserably at guaranteeing an affordability clause in the plans.

And yes, I know you think that it was a concession to the Republicans to get their votes, but everyone else in America has come out from under their rocks and knows that this crap ass bill passed without a single Republican voting for it. Pelosi, Reid and Obama gave zero concessions to the Republicans-because they didn't have to have any of them to pass it.

The next decade of stagflation and deaths due to poor healthcare delivery will be all on you. No doctors will go broke practicing Obamacare-they will just quit taking insurance from anyone.

  23. Anonymous says:

"Lifes of people???" Is that even proper english? Republicans value hard work and ownership not government handouts on the back of real hard working Americans. All the government is doing under the Obama Administration is take food off my table and giving it to the free loaders that want a handout. It's that simple.

If you have a 40 year old making 8 bucks and hour thats failure. Not MY failure it is the person who did not properly prepare them selves for the workforce. Capitalism didn't fail they failed capitalism. I have an idea, GO TO SCHOOL work your way out of school, pay your student loans by a good paying capitalist job and take care of your own family. I did it why can't you?

  24. Anonymous says:

Republicans value deadbeats that look to the government for a handout in the form of a tax break instead of working hard and developing their own talents. They value the 9 million deadbeats in this country who make more than $70K a year and choose to forgo purchasing health insurance and transfer their risk burden on the rest of us.

  25. Anonymous says:

That would have only raised pay to $21,960. Hardly a pittance compared to the salary of the Leester. What was it last year???Oh yes, $174,000.

    State Senators need a payraise.

  26. Anonymous says:

Why are you republicans so worried? You got this election in the bag. The voters have forgot all about Bush and his goofs. They are either not paying any attention to the tea baggers or they think it is ok to be a nut. So enjoy republicans your back. Now when you say no it will be the no of a party in power. Just how bad of shape the country will be in is a different story. Will that make sure Obama is elected to another term only time will tell. But now is the time for a victory for the Republicans. God help us please.

  27. Anonymous says:

9:47 Anon You are talking about your base. You know the people who watch FOX news. So hold your horses. The republicans have been very good at getting the dumb working poor to cut their own throats and vote for leaders who love kow towing to wall street and watching the rich get richer. So don't insult your base. You need them to win the elections.

    7:42 and 7:44–

The point is White can't attack Terry for 'voting for a pay raise' then turn around and do the same thing.

It makes him look like a hypocrite.

Plus, White's ad is a lie–Terry voted to freeze congressional pay–the vote is clearly cited in his ad.

Speaking of TV buys, why did Jon Bruning buy advertising time for his Attorney General campaign when he doesn't have an opponent? Does he really want to be on TV that bad? I'd be pissed if I'd donated to him.

  30. TedK says:

Anon 7:25, I am concerned about our country's debt load, but this is something to work on after the economy recovers. As much as you think the public is concerned about our national debt (and Republicans are doing their best to make it appear to be a big concern), take a look at this CBS News/NY Times poll (Sep 10 – 14):
"What do you think is the most important problem facing this country today? (open-ended)"

    Economy/Jobs 60%
    Health care 3%
    Budget deficit/
    National debt 3%

    Misc. social issues 3%
    War/Iraq/Afghanistan 3%
    Other 24%
    Unsure 4%

  31. Anonymous says:

Ted–that's one reason Terry's campaign keeps making the point about the stimulus being such a failure–it hasn't created jobs.

Interesting how White doesn't talk much about that one either–in addition to staying totally away from healthcare.

    He can run…but can't hide…

  32. TedK says:

SS, I understand (though don't agree with) your policy on links. So I couldn't link to the poll. Now I could have written the poll out long-hand, but what's the point? I could understand the issue with cutting and pasting portions of an article, but this is a short poll! Seems a bit picky and controlling to me. And Anon 10:05, the stimulus has created jobs. Not enough, but the previous POTUS and Republicans dug us into a very deep hole. Sorry Obama couldn't wave a wand and fix the problems immediately. I can hardly wait for the solutions that will be offered by Republicans if they capture the House, other than tax cuts, shutting down the government,….. (Simple minds -> simple "solutions")

  33. Anonymous says:

Ted K Simple minds simple solutions, do you think they are that smart? They got a witch in Delaware. She can wave her magic wand. I hear from republicans all the time cut spending. But they never say what they want to cut.

  34. Anonymous says:

We were promised that the $800 bil. stimulus would cap unemployment at 8 percent.

    It is now 9.6%.

Stimulus has created little other than gov't jobs. Anyone but a simple mind would understand that.

  35. Anonymous says:

Not all of the stimlus money is being used right now. You don't judge the winner of the race until they get to the finish line. Maybe that is too hard for republicans to figure out. I mean most of them believe in trickle down economics. I guess republicans love being cheated.

  36. Anonymous says:

Interesting that several dozen House Democrats are running ads against the healthcare bill and stimulus.

    Why are they jumping ship?

White made a real mistake coming out early for stimulus and then agreeing w/the gov't healthcare takeover.

  37. Anonymous says:

Bruning bought air time because he is a smart politician that is positioning a Senate run and it reinforces or increases name recognition.

    White is going to lose.

    Terry is going to win.

Obama is nothing more than a passing fad. He sold hope and change and never defined what that was and specifically how he was going to pay for it. Now he want's concrete examples of how to reign in Gov't spending? His "Spell" over those who voted for him, who have jobs and or pay taxes, has worn off.

Those supporters thought they wouldn't be expected to live off Beans and Franks. So now the lesson is sinking in, somebody has to pay for all the "free" stuff for those who don't work.

If you confiscated all the earnings of those earning more than a million a year you couldn't pay the debt. It's fairly simple math, really. The way to pay for all the "free" stuff is to take more away from the middle class. And now the light goes on and Obama is out. C ya.

  39. Anonymous says:

I bet Lee Terry would take a position in the State Legislature getting paid $12,000 a year plus Health Insurance, iffffff, it left him 95% of his time to sue local government departments and agencies so he could afford private schools, a nice home in Memorial Park with a fancy new addition and TWO airplanes that he can avoid paying Nebraska personal property taxes on by housing them at the same airport that Mike Fahey kept his airplane while he was mayor.

On second thought, maybe I should run for the legislature, I bet their health insurance premiums are far less than the one's I pay for myself as a small business owner.

    Responding to "Ricky" from yesterday–

Obama and the Dems took the debt from $10 bil. to $13 bil. in just 20 months. Part of this is the stimulus ($800 billion) but Healthcare ($1.2 trillion) hasn't started to kick in yet. Together, that's 2 trilion more in spending and debt.

Terry didn't vote for it–White supports it.

That's a big diff between the two–and it is the key issue of concern to voters.

I know you don't care–but the large majority of voters do.

  41. Anonymous says:

Will Tom White take part in the Dems celebration of healthcare on 9/23?

Maybe he can tell us how wonderful it is that insurers are looking to raise rates on individual policies due, in part, to the new mandates in the law. Thanks, Tom.

  43. Anonymous says:

The whole purpose of stimulus was to create jobs. Other than gov't census jobs, it hasn't done so. I think even White knows that–and that's one reason he is running away from it and the healhtcare bill.

  44. Anonymous says:

Amazing the amount of willful ignorance on this blog. You can say 2 + 2 = 5 all you want, doesn't make it true. And you can claim that the stimulus created no jobs, but that doesn't make your claim true either.

  45. Ricky says:

And let's not forget that under Rep Terry and George W Bush we got into two wars that were not paid for.
That greatly added to our debt as well as numerous other social problems.
Can we hold Mr Terry responsible for Bush's war of choice in Iraq?
Why not? I don't remember hearing Mr Terry question the rationale or W's lies about the weapons of mass destruction that were imaginary.
Fighting two wars at the same time costs a lot of money if the Republicans have not noticed.

7:52 I am talking about the majority of Americans that try to make an honest living hoping the government stays out of their way. Telling the American voter he/she is not educated because they don't rely on handouts is not the way to get your liberal ideas out. Americans don't take to being called uneducated by the so called upper liberal philosophy.

It was on the back's of real true Americans that built this Nation. Hard work and dedication to an idea of liberty and freedom. To be able to get ahead without govenment chains. Remember Thomas Jefferson said…. "Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves are its only safe depositories."

    Need I say more???

As a teacher for over 12 years if you want to talk about government and liberty I will be more than happy to have you in class. Based on your response you need to go back to reading the Federalist Papers and learn about Liberty.
