Shutdown blues

First, a Separated at Birth, since we haven’t had one in quite a while…

US Senate quester, Ben Sasse and Vision Quest-er…
Matthew Modine!

Sasse - Modine SAB 01

Democrats are clamoring, apparently, about Lee Terry’s recent statements regarding the government shutdown. You will remember that Terry first stated he would keep his salary, then stated that he realized this was a mistake and will now forego his Congressional salary while he works through the government shutdown.

And what do the Democrats say? Oh my! Omaha City Councilperson Pete Festersen’s phone is “ringing off the hook”!

(Quick aside: what “hook” are we talking about exactly? When was the last time ANY phone rang off a hook? It’s the year 2000, or some point afterwards, for gawds sake peoples. Can we come up with a different metaphor? “My cell phone was buzzing across the table!” © .)

Ok , but note that this was the same Peter Festersen who said that he would not run because he didn’t want to move his young daughters and could better serve Omaha on the City Council. So what has changed? Oh, well, Lee Terry made a bad statement…then apologized!

Well then! Let’s start singing “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow” and start handing out the ☪☮☭✡☥☯✝ bumper stickers!

Does Festersen have any new ideas?

Does Festersen have a plan to move America forward?

Did Festersen’s daughters suddenly mature?
Not that we know of, but you’ll have to ask him.

But what DOES Festersen and the Democrats have?
They have a new POLITICAL agenda to run on! Lee Terry is a mind-changer! Lee Terry made it into the Huffington Post, and those readers give money to Democrats and then a Democrat could yell and holler about Lee Terry and then Pete Festersen could help out Barack Obama more!

The local Dems are a wild pack of political hounds looking for their next community organizer to organize America with the Chief Executive Organizer.

And how’s that going for everybody?

But we are hearing that the DCCC is in the field polling for NE02.
And is it possible Baby Buffett could try to step up?

Keep watching…

And self proclaimed Tea Partier, former state senator and county commissioner Chip Maxwell sent out a presser the other day stating that he was thinking about getting back into the 2nd District GOP primary race against Lee Terry.

Maxwell said he doesn’t have any particular beef with Terry, and that the timing of his release has nothing to do with Terry’s recent comments (ahem…), BUT that his motivation is, “is a long-simmering concern over the long-term slide to the left in our national fiscal policy”.

If Maxwell does run, it wouldn’t be the first time Terry has been primaried — and won. And some think there will be at least one other to join in a primary fight (which from a Terry strategy standpoint, would be a good thing). But we know that the Terry peeps have no desire to spend the cash that a primary fight would entail, when it would be needed to the general election, against a Pete “a vote for me is a vote for Pelosi/Reid/Obama” Festersen.

Governor candidate Beau McCoy has a new web ad out.
See it here:

This is the first real bio ad that we’ve seen from McCoy, and as you can see, it is professionally produced and gives a good outline of the candidate, his family, background, etc.

Seems like a good first intro to us, though we’ll let the other camps jump in and criticize.

And we would note that the video has been up less than a week and already has over 13,000 hits. Yow.

And speaking of Gov candidates, we’ve pretty much left out that battle between the Democrats for THEIR Gov nomination. But now ol’ Chuck “I haven’t seen Bob Kerrey’s shadow…yet!” Hassebrook and Annette “Fill in Name ID here” Dubas are battling it out for Dem support.

Dubas recently announced all of the State Senators who are supporting her. And Hassebrook came out the other day with some endorsers, as well.

So, just for the funk of it, let’s take a look at a few of them:

Hassebrook Dubas
Susie Buffett Kim Robak
Dick Holland Brad Ashford
Mike Fahey Steve Lathrop
Mike Boyle Heath Mello
Jim Suttle Amanda McGill
Colleen Seng Gwen Howard
Anne Boyle Jeremy Nordquist
Fred Conley Burke Harr
Jim Esch Sara Howard
Matt Connealy Ken Haar
Tony Raimondo, Jr. Russ Karpisek
Bud Pettigrew Kate Sullivan
Bib Giese
Tanya Cook
Sue Crawford

So…there ya go.

An obvious GIANT RIFT in the Democrat party!
Half of those listed are clearly failing to support one from their own party!!!
Susie Buffett and Brad Ashford at each other’s throats!
Bud Pettigrew and Ken Haar hurling cow pies!
Jim Esch and Amanda McGill having a ginger brawl!

It’s enough to make a Jerry Brown weep in his soup.
(You know, to add salt.)

We’re sure the excitement will just ratchet up on this.

OK, we STILL giggle when we read the breathless reports in the OWH that Bob Kerrey is COMING to Omaha! (He’ll apparently be in town next week for some sort of Dem funder or whatnot.)

Someone! Quick!
Throw a sheet and a blanket and an extra pillow on his sister’s couch!

  1. Bob's Sister's Couch says:

I was sold for twice my market value with Bob’s old Omaha house. Bob will have to find a new place to crash.

  2. Anonymous says:

Sweeper, doesn’t he still own a house here? Rockin’ Bob, that is. I thought it was on the market but I wasn’t sure if it sold yet or not. Has it sold?

Oh, I’m sorry, nevermind. It did sell. And it sold for a TON more than he bought it for. Now I remember. Sorry.

(He probably had a lot of sweat equity in the place.)

  3. We suppose that would be interesting.
If the five GOP Gov candidates want to send their breakdown to us, we would be happy to work out the ensuing Excel spreadsheet.
But we will tell you that it’s a heckuva lot easier to do 2 candidates than it is 5…

  4. anonymous says:

    The above:

Launch your pointless attacks on Beau, but we all know that Pete Ricketts got the whole Kay Orr “let’s raise taxes” crew on his side… so there’s that.

  5. Anonymous says:

Looks like McCoy has made a calculated determination to run down the middle and leave the pro-life voting block to Foley and Ricketts to hassle over. Apparently he has surveyed the electorate and decides that he wins in a five way race by NOT mentioning pro-life. Note his four main issues are the same in this video as on his website and no where does he mention traditional family values. Wonder how that plays with the Homeschoolers who got him elected to the Legislature or are they willing to look the other way to see if his strategy is successful? Politics. Gotta love it.

  6. Cole Busch says:

And McCoy will have the current Governor as well. Not too shabby. Janssen’s list begins and ends with Scott Lautenbaugh. Ouch.

  7. Gaius Gracchus says:

Anon @ 3:17, McCoy Roofing put a new roof & siding on my house. The Vietnamese family who did the work as subcontractors did a great job. I also got a fair, if slow, shake from State Farm, who funded the repairs after last spring’s hail storm.

I never did find out what the Vietnamese for “Mi Raza” is. I also never met Beau McCoy, seeing as he’s in the Unicameral, and does not appear to be involved in the family business.

I don’t know who I support for governor. I am not impressed with anyone I’ve seen so far.

  8. Macdaddy says:

Democrats constantly confuse actions with words. “Just Words” Obama delivered an unworkable health insurance system and the Democrats are pleased as punch with themselves. Lee Terry says something and suddenly the Democrats think that will hide the actions Festerson will take which is vote for Nancy Pelosi for Speaker and shove us further and further into debt.

  9. Geezer Caucus says:

Tom Carlson and John Harms–the geezer caucus. Let’s see…..Carlson made us all vote again on term limits, and Nebraskans rejected any change by an even more overwhelming margin that the other 3 overwhelming votes on term limits. And John Harms still wants geezers to be tested before renewing their driver’s licenses. Pretty exciting, huh!

  10. Guy says:

McCoy doesn’t have any endorsements from senators in the legislature. That should tell you all you need to know about what his peers think of him. The Governor ain’t endorsing him either.

  11. Anonymous says:

What do Bill O’Reilly and Tom Carlson have in common?
    They’ve both got God’s number on speed-dial!
Bill O’Reilly says God told him to write his new book, “Killing Jesus: A History.” The Fox News anchor explains in an interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes” that one night he awoke with the title of the book in his head. He says he believes he got that message from the Holy Spirit.
From a hometown article on Carlson, “Tom was planning to put his support behind Sen. Mike Flood in his run for governor. But, after Mike decided not to run because of family medical issues, Tom and Margo prayed for guidance and decided that God was leading Tom to be governor of Nebraska.”
The voices in my head tell me that both are wrong.

  12. Anonymous says:

If you look at the list of supporter for Dubas you see some people, but y don’t see any $$$$$:) However, on the other side you $$$$$$$$…….just saying. For crying out loud, and on the floor of the legislature, McGill can’t even find a job other than stocking at Target, even with a degree from goo old NU and not being hideous.

  13. Anonymous says:

If you look at the list of Democrat state senators supporting Dubas, notice who is missing that she has served with: Avery, Conrad, Wallman, Bolz, Kolowski. And from her first 6 years there is White and Preister and Kopplin and Council and. . . . Of course no Republicans from this ‘non partisan’ body will support someone who always tows the Democrat line. BTW, Robak was never a state senator.

  14. Macdaddy says:

Of course, one of Terry’s actions is to vote for John “I can’t roll over for Obama fast enough” Boehner as speaker. This was always the main problem with Cruz’s strategy: weak Republican leadership. Boehner is even going to reverse the sequester. When did anyone ever mention the sequester. Terry, you better get on the phone and tell Boehner to quit being such a wuss. Otherwise, this will be your last term when all of us Republicans stay home next fall.

  15. Macdaddy says:

Ah, Obama is going Arafat on the Repblicans: he gets 105% of what he wants and says No Deal! Obama just saved Boehner’s hide…and Terry’s.

  16. Anonymous says:

What’s amazing about all these “intro” pieces is how they all blend to look alike. Nothing cuts through the crap. THAT should tell you something. I mean seriously how many of these guys are either walking the cornfields or in this case riding a horse as if it was something they did on a Sunday. Better bumper sticker for Mike: Foley. Not a Prayer

  17. Anonymous says:

Y’all better watch out. Rumor has it that NDP Chair, Vince Powers, has blown $75,000 of his party’s money on a top secret report from Clinton strategist, Mike Lux. It supposedly reveals all the secrets the NDP will need to know in order to crush the NEGOP. How Powers expects it to work is a mystery – the report is so secret he won’t even share it with the State Central Committee. Or maybe there were some things in it that Vince doesn’t want them to know?

  18. Anonymous says:

What is in Powers’ Lux report is basically a suggestion to tap the deep pockets of Nebraska’s liberal millionaires. To convince them to cough up the bucks, Lux suggests that the sugar daddies (and mommies) be given the complete power to set the party’s agenda, chose the candidates, and control the messaging. Nothing new there.

  19. Ricky says:

I read where Mr Terry said he laid off some in his office but might have to hire security for some reason. That reminds me of when he and his Canadian allies who schemed to have law enforcement label those who would demonstrate against the Keystone pipeline criminals who would be subject to anti-terrorism statues.
Worse than Mr Terry’s “damn straight” gaffe is that he signed a letter by Ted Cruz supporting tying the Continuing Resolution to fund the government to defunding Obamacare.
That was really stupid of the Tea Party to which Terry apparently belongs. Of course Mr Obama would not capitulate to that, and the GOP is taking a drubbing in the polls.
Not a lot of people happy with Mr Terry especially those that are out of work due to the government shutdown.
Terry does not represent Omaha, but just Sarpy and the far right. For goodness sakes Festerson or SOMEBODY send Terry back home to Millard.

    Ricky From Omaha

  20. Anonymous says:

Shame on you for mentioning the immaturity of Peter Festersen’s daughters in a political context. That is not your job. It’s Festersen’s.

Using children to promote humor detracts from their natural role of being body armor for their parents.

  21. Lil Mac says:

Dad, well said. The fact that Sequester is never mentioned is probably due to Republicans going at whatever red flag Obama chooses to shake in front of them. They step on each other trying to get at it. How they appear to others never enters their mind.

Most Americans don’t see Republicans objecting to a lack of “care” in Obamacare. Instead, they see Republicans objecting to “Obama” in Obamacare. And Republican leaders seem not to care what Americans think. Yet as voters, most American reelected Obama. Americans are concerned about Obamacare’s bad effects on them and China owning our national debt, etc. The GOP’s frontal assault mindset distracts from it addressing those concerns more effectively.

When was the last time we saw Obama make a seemingly stupid frontal assault that didn’t turn out to serve some other purpose to his advantage? He has beaten everything the GOP threw at him and still Republican leaders want to believe Obama is stupid and just plain lucky.

GOP leaders focus only on plunging the sword home. That is the least important part of a political fight. It is all parry, parry, parry. You protect yourself by deception and thereby create opportunities before your opponent knows what’s going on.

Whatever one’s principles are doesn’t matter if one’s leaders are strategically retarded.

  22. Agree with Lil Mac. Obama is a fine politician, a quintessentially dangerous thing when combined with complete administrative incompetence.

You Dem trolls should have your Mommy read you the front page stories about in those well known right-wing publications the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune this morning. Executive summary; know how bad people have said it is? It’s much, much worse. All you’ve seen is the front end. It’s the back end, that takes your painfully entered personal information and turns it into a garbled mess, that should concern you.

Darn, that was a spoiler, wasn’t it?

  23. Macdaddy says:

But RWP, it’s all going to be fixed by January 1 and we’ll dance with unicorns among the rainbows.

Lil Mac, the GOP leadership is getting spooked by a poll that was 20% government workers and 53% Democrats. As much as it annoys me when Sweeper insists on always seeing the cross tabs, he or she is right. It matters who you ask. That’s an interesting point though about people thinking Obama is being attacked and not just his crap program. Oh well. I guess I’ll have to settle for schadenfreude when all his defenders end up having to pay fines because they weren’t allowed to sign up.

  24. Macdaddy says:

When Obamacare was being debated, Republicans put forth several plans, none of which would have added to the deficit like Obamacare, probably would not have the huge increase in premiums like we’re seeing with Obamacare, especially for healthy young adults, and could have led to real reform of the system. Oh, and there was no tax that wasn’t a tax to sell the plan but now is a tax to keep it Constitutional. The Democrats held the White House and both Houses of Congress so they, and the media, completely ignored the proposals. You can google it if you actually were interested in finding out more about the proposals.

  25. Exactly what WAS the Republican plan for American healthcare? Anyone?

Actually there is one. it involves removing obstacles to selling insurance across state lines, and tort reform.

But why, given the Democrats are engaged in destroying healthcare, does there have to be a Republican plan to make it better? Wouldn’t just leaving it alone be better than Obamacare.

  26. Anonymous says:

Just as I thought, leave it alone and let the capitalist buzzards continue feeding on the weak ones. Darwin would LOVE you guys!

  27. Anonymous says:

WTF do YOU guys care about how much money the middle class has to spend? You’ve been supporting those that have been crushing the working class for decades. Why the sudden concern?

  28. Pete Festerson's Agenda says:

The Democrats have totally screwed the middle class on ObamaCare. What family can afford 10,000 coinsurance and deductibles?

  29. To Pete Festerson's Agenda says:

It’s time Omaha families pay their fair share. Pete will make sure Omahan’s pay their fair share.

  30. Macdaddy says:

I think it is hilarious that you think those against Obamacare are social Darwinists when there isn’t one iota of evidence to show that Obamacare will make healthcare more affordable for the middle class, get more people covered, or improve healthcare. You just take it on faith that The One will deliver. Well, guess what? “This will not add to the deficit.” Lie. “If you like your health care plan, you can keep it.” Lie. “Families will save $2500 on average.” Lie. “If you like your doctor you can keep him.” Lie. “This is not a tax.” Lie. Each and every one of those statements was obviously a lie when Obama uttered them and the last year has shown that this has done more to hurt the middle and lower classes than Obama’s attempt to keep gas prices high. The economy has been frozen in place for years because of Obamacare. Healthcare premiums have been sky-rocketing for over a year. Having the IRS enforce this has disaster written all over it. But you guys think because you care in your hearts, what you actually do doesn’t matter, regardless of the results. It’s bizarre and reminds me of medicine back in the Middle Ages where they would perform blood-letting. But let me answer Anon 7:38’s question: being middle class, there has been no sudden concern on my part, but there certainly is an urgency because of the hatred of the middle class shown by President Obama.

  31. Anonymous says:

Yes. One day we will all look back on these times that signaled the end of the GOP, along with all of its capitalist greed, and welcomed the survival of the fittest – a new generation of more humane beings, harbingers of a brighter future for all mankind.
Who knows? Maybe one day they’ll dig the carcass of one of you old pachyderms out of the permafrost and wonder what purpose you served.
Darwin would have loved you, just as he would have loved the wooly mammoths – dead and frozen in the tundra.

  32. The Hadley Effect says:

Doesn’t the governor’s race really boil down to who Galen Hadley will endorse? Also, the impact of LeRoy Louden’s pick could have some big state-wide impacts. My guess is that the Geezer Caucus will stick together!

  33. Hadley and the Geezer Caucus says:

Galen Hadley will endorse whom ever Catholic Health Initiatives senior management tells him to endorse. They have controlled Hadley since he was elected—remember LB999, where he and Kathy Campell tried to limit competition for Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney? LB999 tried to outlaw any new hospital in Kearney. It didn’t work, but Hadley is still at their beck and call.

  34. Macdaddy says:

Midnight Anon, it’s still “survival of the fittest.” Obamacare didn’t and won’t change that one iota. Maybe your stegosaurus-size brain will one day grasp that. Of course, if you think this is currently survival of the fittest in America, you should just have your mom change your diaper and heat up another ba-ba for you.

  35. Anonymous says:

Wow, Macdaddy. Did you invent all that snappy retort all by your own little self? There sure are a lot of your fellow right-winged microcephalics that have been plagiarizing you out there on the blogs!

  36. Spike says:

    Well now;

#1. Lee Terry is a useless Welfare Queen & needs to go either by a Dem or a GOPER!! Suggestion, find someone competent to challenge the Queen in the primary! Although in fact, Terry is a true representative of red Nebraskans in brains & actions, or no action. He is, like most of you, TOTALLY IMPOTENT!!!

#2. All the problems inherent in the ACA were concessions to you brain dead GOPERS which is basically just more WELFARE to the corporate HC industry that want’s you to be as SICK as possible to suck your wealth dry!

    # 3. Why do you Reds call yourselves Conservatives when in fact you are mostly REGRESSIVES?
