Why the Unicam won’t do anything to Chambers

“Burke’s Bulldog” is a contributing writer on Leavenworth St.

Chambers room 01Here’s the truth of the matter – the Unicameral is an institution that has bent over backwards to make Ernie happy. He has had a history of saying racist remarks on the Unicameral Floor, and not only does he NOT get criticized for it, he seems to be glorified. There is even a Hearing Room named after him (see attached).

Senators are afraid that he will bring the session to a grinding stop or kill their bills on the floor. Freshmen make it a point to say how much they appreciate him (*cough*Ebke*cough*). And the media? If you can find a negative article about Chambers written by Paul Hammel, JoAnne Young, Grant Schulte, Martha Stoddard or the Omaha World Herald or Lincoln Journal Star’s Editorial Boards, I’d gladly read it.

Go on. I’ll wait.

But if it wasn’t for Nebraska Watchdog and KFOR, Thursday is a nothing day. But both of those entities have hit Chambers before. It wasn’t until Senator McCoy brought up the issue. Then it was the media that arrived late to the party. And here we are today.

One last thing – the big winner from all of this: Randy Gregory.

Doesn’t the Legislature realize they have a responsibilty here? If they won’t vote to publicly censure his remarks, they are complicit with future inciting of violence and illegal activity from Chambers who now has shown that he completely controls them. This is pathetic. The photo opp I saw on Facebook of them holding signs to “support blue” rings very hollow after the neutered remarks many of them made, defending Chambers’ right to free speech.

Chambers can say want he wants, some of the things he has said this session there is no reason to condone or defend, enabling him is spineless.

It’s the soft bigotry of low expectations. I agree that Chambers should be censured. BTW, Bulldog, that says the Ernie Chambers Memorial Hearing Room. He’s not dead yet. Are you sure it’s named after him?

You call for Pat’s head over a blog and you call for an apology over a statement advocating the killing of cops. Great consistency Jessica. Your a genius.

Too many Nebraskans assume Unicameral Senators don’t do their jobs like thoughtful adults. That supposition however wears thin over the decades.

To say Senators are complicit in Ernie slipping his arm up inside each and working them like a hand puppet is not just hyperbole, it misses the greater seminal and to me painfully obvious point, that our Nonpartisan Unicameral is A NONPARTISAN UNICAMERAL. It sucks, literally creates a vacuum of what should be checks and balances.

All lawmaking bodies have problems, but the checks, balances and nuanced oversights that won’t allow a Chambers to exist elsewhere, at least not so easily, are totally absent in the Nebraska legislature. Elsewhere, you have members of a second house who are by duty and oath encouraged to tell members of the first house they look stupid with a barber’s hand up their arse. When a party chairman here says the same, NE Senators in their officially nonpartisan seats ignore the advice.

When a grossly abnormal situation exists through decades of different changing leaders and members, and Chambers himself isn’t a magical Rasputin, then the problem is systemic. There is something wrong with the mechanism that causes this political pathology to continually and automatically replicate and regrow. As you may notice, you keep sending new Senators into the Unicameral and none of them cannot work normally amid the imbalance of it.

If Ernie left today, he’d be replaced by some other weird frog puffing up in that vacuum.

The biggest problem is Senator has a valid point. ISIS is not a threat to Omaha. For some citizens, their greatest danger actually is the Omaha police force.

  7. To Eye Ball says:

Yes to criminals, the police may be hazardous to your health. In North Omaha, its members of your own race. Black on Black crime is the #1 factor in murders in Omaha. While that happens Senator Chambers is dealing with Mountain Lions

I believe that Chambers sincerely believes the police are a threat to black and brown people.
And since the Neb. Const. enables Chambers to say anything he wants to say, well…

This is what I realize about Chambers: Although he KNEW that for three years some disabled children (who had been moved to group homes out of their parents’ school district of residence) and some homeless children (who had no school district of residence) were denied admittance to public school in Nebraska. This policy defied both federal and state constitutions and was based on an antiquated Nebraska statute which, Chambers along with his 48 colleagues, had a DUTY to correct. (Neb. Const. Art. III, Sec. 30).

Now compared to bombastic declarations on the floor of the Unicam, I understand that cheating children of their education in Nebraska pales by comparison. Indeed, Chambers statements were so inflammatory, that they may have even displaced Nebraskans’ football mania for a time. But I shall never forget nor excuse Chambers’ gross negligence as a Nebraska lawmaker! (Somebody done somebody wrong song???)
