Links on a Monday morn

On this Day of Infamy, here are a few links to start you out…

Ricketts Dumps the Death Penalty

Haven’t seen a Friday evening news dump around here in a while.

But at 5pm this past Friday evening, Governor Ricketts announced that he would not be seeking any executions before the vote of Nebraskans on the issue next November.

Further, he won’t be seeking to obtain the controversial lethal injection drugs before then either.

Here is the full press 5:53pm release:

“In November 2016, Nebraska voters will determine the future of capital punishment in our state at the ballot box. To give deference to the vote of the people, my administration will wait to carry out capital punishment sentences or make additional efforts to acquire drugs until the people of our state decide this issue.

“Over the last several weeks, I have stepped up conversations with the Attorney General and the Corrections Director regarding a comprehensive review of the capital punishment protocols used in other states. My administration will continue to review potential protocol changes.”

Not real clear why they went that route, news-wise. It seems like Ricketts must see this move as a defeat. Nebraskans are more likely to see this as a very reasonable move, considering the upcoming vote.

Now the thing with the drugs is a little…different. On the one hand, if they aren’t going to for sure execute anyone ever again, why bother with them. On the other hand, one would hope they’re figuring things out so they don’t have the India debacle once again after the vote goes through.

Sort of reminds me of the Athletic Director who fires the head coach without a plan on whom to hire. Point is, have a clear PLAN after you make your big move. Otherwise you’ve left a lot swinging in the breeze.

Non-Sequitur of the Weekend

Goofiest point though was Dan Parsons of the anti-Death Penalty group claiming,

“Governor Ricketts’ decision to immediately stop all attempts to illegally obtain execution drugs is an admission that the death penalty in Nebraska is broken beyond repair.”

Well, now there’s a leap for ya.

How about, “Ricketts move is an admission that he hates puppies!”

Logic just flowwwwws.

Sasse travels to California

Speaking of late-night media submissions, Senator Ben Sasse put out this video just before midnight Sunday evening:

This is Sasse standing in front of the memorial for the San Benardino massacre.

It is in essence a response to the President’s statement from last night.

Not clear why Sasse decided to do it there.
Or whether he was certain about what the President was going to say.

Though the video looks to be pretty professionally done — doesn’t seem to be shot on an iPhone like most of Sasse’s videos. Has a “film” quality to it.

Dive in.

Carly in Omaha

And also on Sunday, Carly Fiorina spoke to Nebraska Republicans — introduced by Legislature Speaker Galen Hadley.

Chip Maxwell put it up live on Periscope, and you can see two different versions — Fiorina’s speech and a Q&A, up on Periscope until this evening. After that, if Maxwell uploads to YouTube, we will link.

  1. Truth Hertz says:

Obama spoke yesterday. Today is Pearl Harbor Day. Both are tributes to presidential PC waffling.

Half our fleet lost due to FDR’s political correctness. The USA won only because our enemy didn’t hit our oil in Pearl Harbor but did attack Russia. But for our enemy’s stupidity, the Pacific today would be an imperial slave state and all of Europe a Fascist dictatorship.

FDR didn’t want to slaughter women and children. Same as Lincoln. Yet after four years of bloody war, FDR in 1945 had Lemay slaughter 125,000 women and children in one night (and that was before the atom bombs) and Lincoln in 1864 had Grant/Sherman conduct scorched earth that starved thousands of women and children to death. — We killed their families. As Lemay said, “If you kill enough of them, they will quit fighting.” The math is undeniable. But being a nation of hopeful idiots, we repeatedly must re-learn that the hard way.

Last night, Obama again said Islam isn’t a violent killer faith (despite Mohammad giving everyone he ever met the choice of obey or die). Obama cannot even name the enemy “Islam”. Some GOP candidates have named it, as Trump did when he doubted Islam is essentially peaceful. Yet Trump alone says we must kill ISIS’s families. That’s not revenge. That alone is what stops them fighting.

We don’t like hearing Trump say that. It seems rude falsity. Like FDR, Lincoln and Obama, we would avoid facts and hard truths. We don’t want to go where Trump already is and where we all must eventually be if a free USA is to survive.

How stupid is that of us? For freedom is tenuous and complex society vulnerable. Islam is an opinion-less desert as easily filled with human ash as it is with sand.

The USA still isn’t at war with Islam. But Islam can only be great if your Western freedom is dead. It is at war with you. So roll up your sleeves. This isn’t going to be pretty or easy.

    • Sparkles says:

The GOP’s, and specifically Donald Trumps Duck Dynasty Diplomacy are an invaluable gift to the recruitment efforts of ISIS and it’s leaders.

      Trump –
“The other thing with the terrorists is you have to take out their families, when you get these terrorists, you have to take out their families.”
      and
“We’re going to have to do things that we never did before.”
(what could that possibly be Don, considering our history of internment, torture, black sites, nuclear devastation, My Lai, slavery, rape – en masse, etc..)

And of course you’ve got the rest of the clown show now screaming out – ‘Me too! Me too!”

“We will carpet bomb them into oblivion,” Cruz said at a multi-candidate event in Cedar Rapids sponsored by the Tea Party-aligned FreedomWorks group. “I don’t know if sand can glow in the dark, but we’re going to find out.”

And Ben Carson: “For instance, you know, if there is a rabid dog running around your neighborhood, you’re probably not going to assume something good about that dog,.”

You can be certain every ISIS recruiter on the planet immediately and gleefully translates and disseminates this belligerent warmongering on behalf of America’s ‘leaders’.
It is the EXACT reaction ISIS leaders hope to inspire with their attacks and it is reason to continue the attacks.

      • bynd says:

        Sparkles,

So you are part of ISIS in America since you know exactly what they want?

I can’t decide if you are that naive, ignorant or so full of yourself that you actually believe the garbage you put out. Isn’t it about time you grew up and acted like an adult? Or will you also blame the Repub. candidates when Bernie beats Hillary?

  2. Focus on your job says:

Ben Sasse in California making films? Ben take a lesson from Chuck Hagel. Quit trying to be president and do a great job as a Senator. You will get rewarded for doing a great job for your state.

  3. Sparkles says:

A carefully crafted speech, professional quality video/audio and editing and starring the political aspirations of Ben Sasse along with a supporting cast of 14.
    14 dead Americans.

    Sasse states:
“This is not about anything we have done wrong.”

    Wow.
That only ignores about 100 years of blood-letting, soul crushing hegemonic zeal on a global scale unprecedented in history.
Of course our global reign of death-and-terror-for-profit are only a part of a complex story, but they’re a part impossible to so cavalierly discard.

    Also Mr. Sasse also proclaims:
“It matters what you think about the nature of God, and whether he’s revealed himself.”
“What you think about salvation matters. Heaven and Hell matters.”

    And therein lies the beast.

I agree with Hertz. I lived much of my life in the Philippines where men are nailed to crosses at Easter. Real nails hammered through their hands and feet. The government shows up to make sure they get tetanus shots and that the nails and whips of the flagellants are sterilized.

This pain and bloodletting is condoned and facilitated by government. And I think the psychology of the people who volunteer or are peer-pressured into crucifixion must be similar to that of people in Islamic countries with sharia law punishments and Jihad bloodlettings. Governments tend to get behind whatever beliefs their people believe.

However there is a big difference between Christians volunteering to nail themselves to crosses to honor “God” and Moslems nailing Christians to crosses to kill them to honor “Allah”.

Every act of Jesus violence is directed toward one’s self while every act of Mohammadan violence is directed against others. That outward harm automatically makes Islam a secular monster. The worst a devout Christian will do is show up on your doorstep and bother you with flyers.

Of course, faiths can be twisted or ignored to justify anything. And people and governments can kill you just fine without religion. But sincere religious faith is a gigantic motivator of decent people to do bizarrely indecent acts.

    • repentinglawyer says:

Anonymous at 9:58, The history of Christian AntiSemitism hardly supports your cheery view of Christianity or perhaps better Christians. Whatever the causes of Islamic terrorism, its existence hardly justifies the self righteousness on display among many Christians. We are all sinners and grace is sheer gift.
As for Truth Hertz, his views on Lincoln and Roosevelt and American Military History more generally are ill informed and silly. His fixation on PC and supposed American innocence have no warrant in reality, just ask the Native Americans or look at how much of USA used to belong to Mexico, and we took over the Philippines to make their Catholics Christian.
So much to admire in our history, we do not need make-believe.

    • Sparkles says:

“The worst a devout Christian will do is show up on your doorstep and bother you with flyers.”

      Really?

Two newsworthy local examples – Troy Newman – Wichita, Kansas resident.
A violent Christian extremist who has called for the execution of doctors who perform safe and legal abortions and who has declared active harm and judgement must be inflicted against LGBT groups by others, as per the will of God.
A violent Christian extremist who in January of 2015 the Kansas Republican Assembly listed as their treasurer.
A violent Christian extremist whose endorsement was just welcomed by Ted Cruz – “We need leaders like Troy Newman in this country who will stand up for those who do not have a voice,” Cruz added.

Kevin Swanson – Elizabeth, Colorado resident.
Then of course there is the Nov 7th, “Kill The Gays” rally just across the river in Iowa, attended by nearly 2000 GOP primary voters. A rally sponsored by the National Religious Liberties Conference and hosted virulently anti-gay preacher Kevin Swanson. A preacher who insists that scripture demands the death penalty for homosexuality, after which wild rants, her introduces the featured guest speakers Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee and Bobby Jindal.
Swanson believes it is better “that a millstone be hanged around the parents neck and they be drowned”, than allow their children to be gay.

      • bynd says:

        sparkles,

Violent and christian are mutually exclusive no matter how many times the ignorant shout it from the mountains. Show one verse in the Bible that is relevant to today that supports such violence. This ought to be good!

      • repentinglawyer says:

Bynd, It is too easy to dismiss violence by Christians by unchurching the violent, too much evil has been done in the name of Christianity, too much nonsense has been proclaimed in the name of Jesus. The division of true from false Christians is for God. Our task is to proclaim what we know of the Truth with kindness and love, and to example as best we can the life touched by Grace.

    • Sparkles says:

Jerry Falwell Jr., the president of Liberty University, on Friday night told students that they should obtain concealed-carry permits so that they can “end those Muslims before they walk in and kill us.”

ISIS leaders are reported to have replied to Reverend Falwell:
      “Thank You!”

  5. To Street Sweeper says:

When is the deadline to apply for Douglas Co Election Commissioner? I did not see the Governor’s office provide that important detail.

Have there been more apply since the Omaha World-Herald story forced the Governor’s office to acknowledge the post was open? Isn’t there a law that says they must formally notify the public? I do not see that response to the reporter’s questions as a formal notification.

  6. Anonymous says:

The Sasse video is fairly odd. Don’t disagree with his content, I just don’t know what the point is of traveling to CA and making the video in front of the Memorial. So if it was a State of the Union Address then he might have been able to be the GOP responder to it but here he is inserting himself as an official responder. What’s wrong with a press release? Something about the effort he went to to do this in CA is unseemly.

    • @Anon says:

I’ve never been a Sasse fan. But this video was smart and the content was strong.

We live a lazy society, if you want to get your message out, you have to give it to people where they are; today that is social media. Guarantee this video has been seen far more than any press release or written statement from Sasse’s office.

    • According to the OWH article says:

Sasse was already in California for a bar mitzvah that had been scheduled for awhile. He didn’t fly to CA to make the video, he was already there and then decided to respond to Obama, for what it’s worth.

Read it in the newspaper, so it must be true!

  7. Sparkles seems unable to distinguish between the mouthing off of a few wing nuts (and that’s assuming he’s not posting fabricated crap from left-wing websites) and semi-automatic fire.

  8. “That only ignores about 100 years of blood-letting, soul crushing hegemonic zeal on a global scale unprecedented in history.”

The last 100 years of American history, according to Sparkles.

  9. bynd says:

    RL:

It is not only not to easy to dismiss violence by some by unchurching them, it is a matter of spreading the truth as you point out, by denouncing that which the Bible does not support. Those who consider themselves “intelligent” and “wise” should understand that many actions are taken in the name of many causes. It is lazy and intellectually dishonest to blame that which you know isn’t true. But their agenda rarely has little to do with honesty.

So, if you’re going to make the claim, at least understand the basic tenants of that which you blame. In other words, since Sparkles doesn’t blame Islam, and to me rightfully so, it has no problem blaming Christians. Very hypocritical, related not to truth but to agenda. It’s makes it much more difficult to spread any Word when all you can do is try to explain first, that one’s perception is not accurate, before they turn and walk away. But then, Jesus never said it would be easy.

But in the interest of my agenda, there are no such verses.
